Could have started a trend for pulled turkey.

Is it true tipper trucks are banned from entering the city before 7 ?

If so why not let them get up there early and miss the rush hour

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
Many many years ago in the 50s, my Dad used to ride a pushbike to work. One Christmas my mum gave him the responsibility of picking up the pre-ordered turkey.

Riding back with it hanging in a bag on the handlebars the said turkey got caught in the front wheel and Dad went head first over the handlebars and smashed his face and chin on the road, blood everywhere.

Christmas dinner was a bit shredded that year.

I can believe it, Gavros. I made that mistake once cycling along the towpath in Oxford, thankfully all I did was take most of the skin off my arm. Even I wouldn't have been stupid enough to try it on a road, never mind at a junction like that.

If I remember right that one in white chapel was a girl who had full shopping bags on each handlebar. Made the bike totally uncontrollable.

A while ago (ahem) If we wanted to cycle to school (Wanstead), we'd have to have a cycling proficiency session before they'd allow us inside the school gates. And a session on how to look after your bike, check the headlock etc.
Do any schools still do that?

Scraper 11:16 Tue Jun 23
Re: Another Cyclist Killed
Introducing subjects such as 'How to not cycle like a cunt' and 'How to not get killed when cycling' into the school curriculum would be a good start.

A brilliant idea tbf

They do it in certain countries.

Gavros,

Honourable mention for the junction of Commercial Street and Whitechapel Road? Seems like there's flowers tied to the lights or railings every time I'm down there. Saw the aftermath of a Boris bike coming a cropper there once, thankfully the victim had already been moved but the bike was still there and you could see just from that that it hadn't been pretty.

Everyone who is on the roads in a vehicle has had to pass a driving test and display understanding of the highway code ... EXCEPT CYCLISTS!

Most people who are on the roads today pay insurance and has a license plater attached to their vehicle and can be tied to any dangerous or illegal activity... EXCEPT CYCLISTS!

it's no wonder their dying out there. No responsibility, no education on how the roads work. I bet most of them dont even know what a "blind spot" is...

"Nobody 'has it coming'."

Those who cycle like twinks (eg women chatting/texting on the phone etc) are at a higher risk than those who pay full attention, wouldn't you agree?

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
Strange how a cyclist death always seems to make headlines. In the UK approximately 1 pedestrian is killed each day, 1 motorcyclist and 2 in cars. There is 1 cyclist death every 3 days. Details here https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/359012/indicator-table.xls.

But when you compare this with nearly 2,000 deaths per day associated with inactivity, it really puts the cycling risk into perspective. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-30812439

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
Scraper, you never had a pedestrian walk virtually into you between buses or between cars or tourists crossing the road while looking the wrong way?

You're certainly more vigilant than me despite being a dispatch rider for 7 years, motorcycle chauffeur for 7 more (and having to hold an advanced motorcycle licence for the insurance), living in central London and being a cyclist there two or three times a week.

We all make rickets from time to time, even me, and most of the time you're lucky enough to just raise your hand in a 'sorry about that' gesture. Nobody 'has it coming'. Honestly, some people would actually have to see a dead woman cyclist under the wheels of an artic before they get how vulnerable humans are and maybe it wouldn't kill you to give them a bit of space.

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
What's pedestrians crossing roads to do with this? I've never ever had them cause me trouble when cycling.
I cycled through central London for 7 years every working day (cool story). If you're vigillant you are guaranteed not to be killed. The problem is, most cyclists don't pay enough attention to what's going on around them.
It's a war zone and should be approached soldierly. Girls on granny bikes chatting on their phone have it coming.

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
David L. Are you some kind of angry simpleton?

Leyroy's boots (who I know isn't), come on, the vast majority of influential media types who write about this are luvvies? And the government are scared of alienating them?

Have you looked around this government? Thatcher would blush at some of the things they've done and it's only going to get worse.

Back to the cyclist 'problem', I don't really think any of you should comment on cycling in London unless you've actually done it or you're a truck driver. A lot of you don't seem to know basic highway code. It is NOT illegal to ride a bike in the kerbside (IE, up the left-hand-side of the traffic), between lanes or the outside of stationary or slow moving traffic. A controversial but basic fact is that it is often far safer to jump a red light when you are positioned on the left side of the road with cars or lorries to your right indicating left. I think that poor lady would still be alive had she jumped the light.

Maybe (and I really hope this doesn't happen) we should adopt what a lot of foreign countries do and make it illegal for pedestrians to cross whenever they like instead of at crossings?

Bike traffic lights at dangerous junctions (at bike-head height giving cyclists say, ten seconds to set off before cars) and enforced 'no pedestrian crossing other than when the green man is flashing' would eradicate these deaths at a stroke.

The question is, would you be happy losing more of your everyday freedom like crossing a road whenever you thought it safe?

Re: Another Cyclist Killed
Been loads of cyclists come a cropper round our way... at least 3 or 4 deaths over the last year or so... potholes seem to be the main cause... that and the narrow country roads round our way... Mrs N/Sold wanted to get us a bike to cycle into work... fuck that for a game of grenadiers ... I'd rather do a tour of helmand
